The Martha Hollowell Scholarship was established through a generous bequest from Martha Hollowell, a retired U.S. Army nurse whose compassion and dedication to individuals living with mental illness left a lasting impact on the Kenosha community.
In the early 2000s, during the formative stages of the Bridges Community Center, Martha visited the center to learn more about its mission to serve individuals dealing with mental health challenges. Although her visits were brief, her interest was sincere and meaningful. More than a decade later, upon her passing, it was discovered that Martha had included the Bridges Community Center and a scholarship fund in her estate.
Nearly $500,000 was bequeathed, with a portion designated to support the ongoing operations of the Bridges Community Center and the remainder used to establish a scholarship fund. The intent of the scholarship is to support students pursuing advanced degrees in mental health–related fields, particularly those who intend to serve the Kenosha County area.
For many years, the scholarship was administered by appointed trustees in partnership with the Rizzo Law Offices. The responsibility for managing and awarding the scholarship has now been transferred to the Kenosha Community Foundation to ensure Martha Hollowell’s wishes continue to be fulfilled for generations to come. We are deeply grateful for Martha’s generosity, foresight, and empathy for our neighbors living with mental illness in Kenosha County.
