About the Scholarship

The Manny Mitka Scholarship Fund honors the legacy of Mamert “Manny” Mitka, a highly respected jazz drummer, percussion instructor, and music store owner in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Known for his strict yet inspiring teaching style, Manny emphasized discipline, strong fundamentals, music reading, and jazz independence. Through his teaching and mentorship, he influenced generations of local musicians before his passing on November 29, 1987.

A passionate supporter of music education, Manny believed deeply in nurturing young musicians and preparing them for successful futures in music. This scholarship continues his commitment by supporting students who demonstrate dedication to band or orchestra and plan to pursue advanced musical training.

Funds from the Manny Mitka Scholarship are used to support Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD) high school seniors who are actively involved in band or orchestra and plan to continue their musical education at a college, university, or conservatory as a music major.

Eligibility

Each year, one scholarship is awarded to a senior band member from Bradford High School, Tremper High School and Indian Trail Academy.

To be eligible for the Manny Mitka Scholarship, an applicant must:

• Be a KUSD high school senior

• Be currently enrolled in Band or Orchestra

• Plan to pursue post–high school training in the field of music

Through this scholarship, Manny Mitka’s legacy lives on—supporting young musicians with the same discipline, passion, and respect for music that defined his life and teaching.

Selection

Recipients will be selected each Spring

NOTE: The Kenosha Community Foundation will announce when applications for the scholarship are available and the date they are due.
